A Brief Encounter

SMACK!  You know the sound... a bird has hit the window, poor thing.

My oldest had been standing near the door and peeked outside to see a little goldfinch passed out on the patio.  Our curious dog, who routinely chews on cinder blocks, was sniffing it.  It was alive, but really out of it so I told him to put it somewhere safe before the cement-chewing dog decided to have a tender little snack.  He gently picked it up and walked out into the yard.  He must have been trying to find just the right spot, or maybe just enjoying holding this sweet little creature, because he walked around for a while.  Before he could find a place to set him the tiny bird awoke.

She slowly started coming to, sitting upright in my boy's hand and clutching him with her tiny feet.

She allowed me to take a few photos and when I lowered my lens, she promptly flew off, leaving us both amazed and grinning in his wake.

May you all be left amazed and grinning at something today.

  1. What a sweet post! I had one of my barn cats bring a bluebird to me last summer (yep, like a retriever) and the same thing - laid in my hands for a few seconds then *poof* into the trees. All three of us were startled!

  3. How wonderful!! The girls would be in heaven to have a chance to hold a goldfinch. The girls watch them forever while the birds are feasting on the sunflowers in the garden.

  5. beautiful - we don't have gold finches out here. i do hate that sounds of a bird hitting the window (you know just what it is even if you are in another room). sometimes when they take a bit longer to perk up we put out a shallow dish of water.

  7. Oh, what a lovely little fellow :)
It must have been nice to help him. I found a pigeon once that was probably hit by a car. It took him 3 days to get better, but it was such a great joy to see him fly away.

  8. I'm so glad you're little bird survived his window collision. What a treat to hold the little feathered friend. Ever since I hung the lace up with your little acorns in my window the birds have been saved from nasty crashes :)
