what a mug!

I am the proud,(emphasis on proud), new owner of the coolest coffee mug around.  Made by my teenager, the one who claims to have no artistic ability, in art class.

My son thinks that because he can't draw things realistically, that he doesn't have any artistic talent.  It's okay with me if my kids don't enjoy art, but I hope I impress on them that being able to render hyper-realistic images is not the only measure of creativity.  Using unusual glaze colors, unexpected shapes, and giant handlebar mustaches on coffee mugs...well, I think that's pretty creative.

It makes me smile to look at it.

  1. What a wonderful creation! I agree, ability to create a realistic image is not an accurate measure of creativity! Stirring a smile is a huge talent, and this charming 'mug' on a mug makes a mark that way. xxoo, sus

What a great creation! My daughter and I have spent our lives trying to give people the confidence to be brave and create. You are doing a wonderful job with your children. Whether they realize it or not they are absorbing your creativity by osmosis. In the future they will be able to look back and see what a wonderful example their mother set for them.

  5. You _should_ be proud. It's wonderful when our kids create. Both my children do, though in different ways. (They are both grown, btw.) My daughter sews and cooks and my son is a graphic artist.

    Enjoy your coffee.

COOL!! If I saw this on a potter's sale table, I'd be purchasing it for my kitchen because it just makes me smile. Very wonderful. -Catbird

  7. Hi Lisa,
It is actually the age that makes him want to draw hyper-realistic!! It's the hormones, I swear!! They mess with more than they should!! I'm kidding about it being the hormones, but it would make sense!! He is at the age when most kids stop making art and loving it. If he could just see how AWESOME that mug is!!! 8*)

I bet someone could offer you a $1,000 gold leafed, jewel encrusted mug and it would have NO APPEAL to you!! I know I am right! I am an Art Teacher! 8*)

  8. It's brilliant. Back in my art teachy days I'd have been really happy to see something like that come out of the classroom ... art for me is about original interpretation not accurate representation.

Um, that IS artistic talent. LOVE the moustasche! That's the kind of thing you'll keep forever...and yeah, it made me smile too. In today's video game, battery powered world I applaude all bursts of imagination/creativity from kids. High five to your son.

  11. I love it, so much character :)

I too believe creativity is not just hyperrealistic images, and it doesn't have to be confusingly abstract either.

    Treasure it!
