Button Monday and a Giveaway!

Some of you may know that I have a rather sizeable stash of vintage buttons.  I love old buttons and enjoy working them into my projects.  I love the history behind them, the odd shapes and colors, and the strange not-buttons that I find mingled amongst them when I buy an old button jar.  Mostly, I love the diggin', the pickin', the explorin'.  I have more buttons than I'll ever use but still...when I see a jar of buttons at a thrift store or yard sale, I have to buy it just so I can dig through it.

what I'm doing today

I have some of my buttons sorted but I have about 50 pounds that I haven't yet sorted.  In fact, they've been sitting in my workspace for about 2 years now sooooo it's time for them to go.  Since I know there are other button-lovers out there, I thought I'd start my de-stash with a giveaway. Yay!

I'm starting with a pound bag o' buttons.  If you'd like to dig through some unsorted old buttons for yourself, then leave me a comment on this post and maybe you'll get one for yourself!

I'll pick a winner on Friday Jan. 28 so please be sure I have some way to contact you.   I'll ship worldwide, so come on fellow button lovers, let's see what treasures you'll get!

Tomorrow I will start adding buttons to my (now empty) destash shop - lilfishextras - so if you're interested, come have a look.  I'll be adding a bunch of these unsorted bags o' buttons to the shop as well as a few more, but if you're looking for a certain kind of vintage button, just ask and I might have it for you.

Happy Monday everyone!

  56. Buttons are memory joggers! Sorting through piles of buttons gives no end of pleasure, and now I know I'm not alone in this!! Several years ago in a magazine I saw a photo of what I'll call a button swag. It was a length of wire with MOP buttons twisted on, spaced maybe 4 or 5 inches apart, and only about a yard or so long, resting between the articles on a nightstand. I found some fine copper wire and made some for myself. There's one on a windowsill, one curled over the top of a hanging chamber pot, one from a nail on the half-log mantel...I'm sure you get the picture!

Your blog gives me as much pleasure, if not more, than a whole tub full of buttons!! Thank you so very, very much for sharing!

  59. My Auntie had a tin of buttons when I was a child. When I visited her, I would sit with them on my lap and simply run my fingers through them.
I loved the colours, yes mostly dark back then, but even so the odd pink or shiny jet, little duck shapes, glass or mother of pearl........they were just such a simple delight to me.
Guess theres many of us that have never lost that simple pleasure, so yes please, pop my name in the draw 'hat'!
    And thankyou for the opportunity!

  62. What an amazing collection you have! I love to use that one of a kind old button on my project too - makes it unique I think.

    ReplyDelete
  63. How can you NOT sort through them even while bagging them up? It wouldn't happen if it were up to me. I would start out bagging and get lost for the rest of the week amid the buttons. My bladder would be angry with me, too!

Just over a year ago I made my mother a wall quilt of painted and sanded muslin that was embellished with vintage buttons. I had to buy a package of VINTAGE buttons from a local craft shop because I didn't have a stash of my own - my mother still has the family button stash.

This quilt was a first for me as was the button embellishing. I loved the whole process and must say I am very please with the outcome. The rest of the package of vintage buttons has become the beginning of my personal stash. Adding to it has been an absorbing past time. I can see why you have so many!

Thank you, Lisa, for adding my name to the draw for this pound of treasure!

  74. As much as I love buttons - my 39 year old daughter is the one I'm hoping to get these buttons for. She had an unusually close relationship with her Grandma N - my hubby's dear mother. They loved each other from the moment they met and cherished every moment they spent with each other. Grandma N had an old Maple Buffett where she kept a large jar of buttons she had collected most of her life. My daughter loved getting that big jar out and culling through all the different buttons. Grandma N had to go into an assisted living facility and after that a nursing home. My daughter begged for her Grandma N's buffet but alas, the big jar of buttons were gone. No one in my hubby's family seemed to recall what had happened to them. She still talks of them after all these years. I started collecting buttons but it has been a very slow process and I don't always think of it. This would be a wonderful gift for my special daughter but if not - it has reminded me again that I need to "make the time" to search for some buttons for my big jar I've been trying to fill (not even 1/4th full). What a wonderful give-away

LOL I love buttons. I saw your photo and gushed to my fiance that there was this photo of such delicious, wonderful, yummy goodness.

He said (after he saw it): I love you honey, but you're demented.

    lol! Buttons are so awesome.

  137. What a great way to trim down your button collection and make one of us (your blog readers) very happy! :D
It's amazing how such little things (like buttons) can bring so much happiness :)

That photo of your buttons is so amazing, and it brings to mind many afternoons spent in my grandmother's basement marveling at her buttons. I see you already have plenty of offers to take a few pounds off your hands, but I still have to have my chance at winning a few days of button sorting joy. Thanks for the giveaway and the reminder of those precious days spent with my grandmother.

  141. Holy mountain of entries! I have no hope of winning, and little hope that this comment will ever even get read! But I have to say that sorting through the button box is a generations-old tradition in my family. My kids will do CHORES for the hope of getting a chance to sift through my pirates' booty of treasures! Of course, it is a dwindling loot, as I tap into it far more often than I replenish it... Maybe I'll win since it's my birthday on the 27th! ((0:Holy mountain of entries! I have no hope of winning, and little hope that this comment will ever even get read! Love seeing your beautiful photo by the way. This is a wonderful idea and so thoughtful of you. Hope I am a winner. I have photos of my buttons - similar to yours - that I took to blog and never got that far. I'd forgotten all about them. I'll have to hunt them down on my old laptop. Have a beautiful day.

  162. I <3 vintage. I have some vintage buttons that were my great-grandmother's BUT I haven't used them b/c they are sentimental. I can't decide on a project worthy! Your button bags are a fabulous idea. I like the tag with a button on top, too... nice touch.
