On occasion I take custom orders for stones and on occasion those requests throw me. This stone was one of those. A purple turtle was requested and I wasn't sure how to go about stitching a turtle on a felted stone.
After a few false starts I just kind of sighed and put it down while I thought about it. Sometimes thinking about it isn't the answer for me though. When I came back to it, I decided to just have fun with it and the project fell into place in a snap and a literal purple turtle sat on the table in front of me. I like how he/she turned out and am thrilled that his new owner does too.
Thinking and planning definitely has its place, but sometimes it's best to just step out of your own way, get out of your head, and have fun. Don't you think?

ReplyDeleteJust an FYI if you want to make one totally accurate (sorry this is just the naturalist in me coming out :-) ) There would be 13 scutes (the sections on the carapace). American Native lore tells of 13 moons on turtles back. Each section represents the 13 moons of the year. I know there are only 12 months on our calendar, but if you divide 365 by 28.5, which is the time it takes for the moon to cycle, you get 13.
Okay, I'm done with my lesson. I still think this turtle is just beautiful the way it is!

He's lovely. I often work the way you mention, whether it's a project or an essay for school. I let it percolate and when I`m finally ready, it springs forth almost completely formed. Usually. Sometimes I get writer's or embroiderer's block and nothing works! Your work inspires me, though and I love this turtle.
