Yesterday was just as I hoped it would be. I chilled out, played at my workbench, and took a walk in the woods. It was lovely and long overdue.
I even made myself a little treat, a ring made of giraffe wood.
Here are some shots I took on my walk that I am finding particularly inspiring. For those that can't get out for a walk in the woods, these are for you. Enjoy.
I was suprised to see a patch of deflated puffballs peeking out from under the snow. I poked one to see if it would puff, but alas, it was puffless.
I love how this rotted pine has begun to fall off in cubes. Isn't the structure amazing?
And life starts anew, a pinecone in the middle of a rotted out stump.
This is the birch I de-barked last year. It's now completely engulfed in mushrooms. Isn't it fantastic?
Check out how the wood in this pine has split at the growth rings. You can pull them out in pieces like shims.
Chick chick was waiting for me when I returned home. She likes to sleep in the sun on the porch.
Then she and her friends did some synchronized dance moves for me. The pics are a little blurry because I was giggling.
Have a great Sunday everyone.

It was the chickens that got me in the end...lol
oh my gosh
thanks so much for taking me in the woods, feeling tired I greatly appreciated not to have to move ;-)
the mushrooms on the birch make me think of the photo Margie had taken in the fall (or winter ?) in the woods (too, of course)
the ring is FABULOUS ! so happy you made something for yourself !
and the chickens ... oh girls, thanks so much for the show !! It was great entertainment !! :D
so glad you had such a nice weekend, you totally deserved it. xoxoxox hugs
Beautiful ring you made. Very nice tour of the woods. We have no snow here and yours made me smile. Love the chickens!
LOVE the chicken dance! LOL ~ great photos of your walk too ~ thanks for sharing! It looks like you have about the same amount of snow we have; but then this morning we got another dumping of it. Oh spring... where are you???
I can't believe how much snow you still have! Love the chickens and could really go for a walk in the woods.
Your ring looks lovely. I am not much of a ring wearer ...however I could see you creating something lovely say on a bracelet or necklace?
Tumus - did you notice that Brown Betty wasn't in step? That's kind of how I am when it comes to dancin'.
Sonia - You just stay there, I'll bring the woods to you. :D
Toodie - I'm glad the snow made you smile. I'll be smiling when it's gone.
Mel - hang in there, it's coming!
Lisa - thanks! I was thinking about making a bangle bracelet. Same concept as the ring just bigger, right? We'll see how that turns out. :D
wow, that birch tree is amazing! did you pull out the wood and are you going to do something with it? Also - dumb question - but do you have to move chickens inside in cold weather?
love your post today!
Liz - birches decay really quickly. That one was dead when it fell so it will just become forest floor. Normally we pull the dead trees out and use them for firewood but that one won't do much so it's just going to look cool in the meantime.
The chickens have a heated coop inside our barn. When the weather is warmer they free-range but when it's super cold they really just stay in the coop or right outside it under the awning of the barn. We have breeds that are more cold tolerant but some days it's just too cold for them to get out of bed. (to which I totally relate)
how lovely! i needed a walk in the woods. my babe has pneumonia and wouldn't you know we are having our first warm and gorgeous days in weeks! we will make it out there soon....
What a lovely post. Thanks for sharing so many photos. I could have used a walk in the woods today. Maybe tomorrow, but in the meantime I'll try to dream of mushrooms, rotting wood, puffballs, sky etc.
and i LOVE the chickens!
Too funny -- chicken dancing! Thanks for the walk in the woods. I spent the afternoon at a children's birthday party in a very large indoor gym. I was afraid that I would be witness to a scene from Lord of the Flies before we could make our escape. I would have much preferred a walk in the woods.
Totally enjoyed this post and the lovely pictures. The strip of green struggling through the snow, the tiny bits of green on the trees giving hope that Spring is right around the corner, the beautiful mushrooms and like everyone - the chickens did me in. Too bad you didn't get a video - you might have won AFV. :)
Sounds like such a great day! Love that moss-covered log slowly melting out of the snow. The chicken dance is too hilarious, too! Your ring is beautiful :)
Dancing chickens! Get 'em an agent, right away!
I found mushrooms too this weekend - the most tantalising ring growing on my lawn under an oak. I think I narrowed them down to St George's Mushroom (with help of my big son, who is good on Biology) which is supposed to be good to eat, but we bottled out before having a buttery fry-up feast of them. I may yet steel myself...
Enjoy your week, Lisa.
i always love to see the world from your perspective Lisa...thank you . it is all so lovely. xx
still so much snow!
o my, that giraffe wood ring! I LOVE it!
imagine coming home to chick chick on the porch
now that would be a happy homecoming
