a natural rainbow

The threat of near-frosty temperatures on our overnight made me a little nostalgic.  I'm not quite ready for the cold.  We only just got over the scorching hot and now... 36?  Really?

It's only temporary, our temps are supposed to be back in the normal early-fall range again for the rest of the week but regardless, the threat of frost was enough to make me want to clutch a little tighter the days of gathering leaves and twigs, barefoot mornings in dewy grass, and the dyepot humming.

This rainbow represents a full year's worth of gathering; leaves, bark, mushrooms from last fall, kitchen scraps, walnuts from Illinois, and more.  I tend to hoard my natural colors, only pulling them out when I have a special project to work on.

Though I do think perhaps I could hang them on the wall, I like them so much.

Hope your week starts off beautifully.

Look how productive you were, and that's just some of your dyeing!
I really want to meet you in person because I'm quite sure you have more than two hands... or a magic wand, or a secret pack of elves working in the night sleeping in the hollows of trees by day.

Those colours are beautiful. I love how soft they are. You do amazing things that I could never do.

It's hard to tell how big each hank is. How much of each colour do you have? If you run out, can you make more?

Beautiful colors! I know from my own dying that it is very hard to use them. They are a finished product in themselves!

nini - I so look forward to the day I meet you. I know it will happen, I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

Heather - I have more of almost all of these colors. Some colors are easy to reproduce because I have a lot of the dyestuffs in my woods - strawberry leaf and tansy for example. Others I'll have to wait for, like the lobster mushrooms - we didn't get any this year. I may never get to use the "dogs nose fungus" again or the dyer's polypore so I'm especially stingy with those colors.

I would hoard those also! Those are amazing colors! Your blog inspires me every time I check out what you have been up to! Gonna go stab some wool now! Have a happy happy week!
