let's pretend

Late summer at dusk.  The mosquitos have gone to bed and the fireflies hang in the trees like christmas lights.
Our ice cubes clink in our glasses as we sip on the last of the homemade kahlua and listen to the owls call to each other from the tall pines in the back woods.

We sit and chat about how the garden is coming along nicely, about how nice the day out on the lake had been.  We hear the guineas settle into the branches of the poplar.  The last sparks of the campfire lift lazily into the sky.

Our sandals dangle from our feet.  We start to think maybe we'll go throw a sweatshirt on over our t-shirts.  We catch the faintest whiff of impending autumn in the air.  And we feel content.

I'm not the kind of person that wants to live her life only looking forward to the next thing.  I'd like to embrace the present.  But I gotta tell ya, this snow-up-to-my-thigh and "today's high will be -10" is gettin' old.  So if pretending that I'm holding a chilled kahlua instead of a hot coffee is going to get me though this day, that's what I'm going with.

I hope you're in a good place today, no matter where that is.  Come join me for a kahlua.

Such lyrical writing! You totally had me there. It helps that we've had three 40+-degree days in a row this week. I'll send some of our digits your way.

Oh Lisa, it always a case of 'the other side is greener' isn't it? Here in southern England, we've had rain (& flooding) all winter long and not a sign of snow, so your pictures make me very envious! But when a certain type of weather just goes on and on, I can understand how you feel. Hope the big thaw happens for you soon. Until then 'wish' some snow my way! :)

Right there with ya, Lisa! We don't have snow, but our long soggy winter has gotten most of us down over here. I'm lifting my glass - well, cup of tea. [clink] :)

Fortunately I'm looking out at fog, rather than snow (though that means I don't get to stay home for a snow day), but I'm totally there for you with another Kahlua when you run out.
= )

I have to laugh because I had exactly the same thought today...I'm not one to whinge about the weather, and I never want to wish my life away, but thigh-deep snow is getting a bit old...and just this morning I noticed a copper cup on the kitchen shelf and thought, maybe if I make a Moscow Mule and drink it with my eyes closed, I can experience Summer for an hour!

Living with hot flashes has turned me into a cold-weather lover/hot-weather hater! Of course, our winters aren't nearly as extreme as yours….

This has been a very long, snowy, and freezing cold winter in Maine also! I have never been looking forward to spring as I am this year! It will get here-it always does. Before we know it there will be bugs and mud! Hang in there!

Thanks for the lovely trip. Now I'll return to the cold and extra windy today, city of Chicago.

I do this while walking the dog in this cold and very wet winter, we had such a lovely summer, which I didn't fully get to appreciate (no big holiday) and so if you close your eyes a little, whilst walking those tree lined streets, the sun is shining through the blossom on the trees and its warm, I can stroll around calmly, instead of hunched up against the wind and rain :)

I thought I was going to go crazy with all the snow we've had here in West Virginia. Finally, it has melted and the rain has taken its place for now. Imagine yourself right out of that snow! You do have some very pretty photos there, though.

actually we had a warming this week in wisconsin
Tuesday I spotted a lady at the library in shorts and a windbreaker. and I am not talking a young teen but an older lady like me(well past her 50's)
wedesday I sported a wind breaker and no hat when I went to knitting group and one lady in the group had on thongs(ok she had just had a manicure but still sandals and no socks). people had cranked open the windows to air out their houses. all because it was almost 40*
spring is in the air or at least false spring is in the air.
and I am going on a winter vacation. I can't wait.... I am going home to Mom's house. according to my brother the snow drifts are 15' high outside of the house. the Straits are frozen and I will be able to walk out on the lake. I can't wait...you can keep you island vacations and sunscreen I am looking forward to lots of snow and even more frozen water on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. I want to hear the songs of the lake...the creaking and groaning of the ice as it grows at night. winter is a mindset...I intend to enjoy my winter vacation
