a stuffed chicken

Last week I mentioned that my daughter spends a lot of time carrying our chickens around.  I worried that she might start dressing them soon if I didn't get her a doll.  Clever Tara suggested that I make her a chicken doll and I thought that was such a good idea I sat down yesterday and did just that.

She's a very simple chicken, made out of some garage sale fabric and scraps of felted wool.  Her eyes are antique shoe buttons.  I stuffed her with polyfil from an old pillow I had put through the washing machine. (I always think washing pillows in the machine is a good idea, but it never is...)

I took her outside to show the girls and got this reaction:

I call that the "whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" look.

Poor stuffed chicken was shunned by the flock.

But the girl seems to like her, and that's all that really matters.
And if she wants to dress this chicken, that's just fine.

My boys liked the chicken too but inform me that she also needs eggs, a cracked open egg, and some chicks.  And some more chicken friends.  And a duck.  (which will probably also require eggs, a cracked open egg, ducklings, and more duck friends)

I sense a flock is in the offing. Maybe one day we can hook her up with Walter.

What a great shape that chicken is. I might try and make one if you don't mind.

The new addition is perfect. I also love her shape and thin she would look perfect perched on my couch. I guess I need to make myself a chicken pillow as well. Your last comments about your boys made me smile because it reminded me of my boys. whenever I have made them a stuffie, requests for clothes, buddies and various accessories immediately follow.

This is brilliant! And yes, a lonesome chicken won't do, it needs a family :)

I guess somedays you feel you had better not start a thread....!
But, the chicken is lovely, best test is if your girl puts her under her arm and wanders around with her?

You've set yourself up for more creativity!

Hugs,

Sandie xx

just brilliant, that material is so right for the chicken, it is cute! How do you just do these things? Your kids must so enjoy having a talented mum, always something new to do. :)

This is seriously too cute, I love that she carries the girls around.
I have a very small collection of chickens in the kitchen until I can have land to have the real thing.
I think a pattern is definitely required.

Hi Lisa,

Your chicken doll is very special! I would really like to make my friend a chicken doll to hold tight when he is having a hard time and needs a hug. Could you give me some pointers on making a pattern? I have have never worked with fabric in 3D before... two profile pieces and a gusset?

Thanks very much, your creations are inspiring!
