yowie! that looks like stinging nettle! i had my first experience with that last week...i thought i had been bitten by a spider, luckily my neighbor knew what it was.
I remember treking thru "groves" of that stuff when we were younger just to get to the creek. Sometimes we'd take my dad's shrub pruners and go hack a path if it was bad enough.
