I've been dreaming of doing a larger-scale project involving my stitched stones. I'm imagining a collection of a hundred or so displayed together, and what a delicious collection of color and texture that would be. The idea has been percolating for a while and something that I keep coming back to is that I'd somehow like to get 'you' involved. I feel such a sense of community with you that read my blog, or stop by on facebook or flickr or twitter; with those of you that share a sense of wonder towards nature and an appreciation for the work that comes from hand and heart.
So while I go forward with my project, I ask if any of you would like to join in by sending me a stone.
Send me a stone and I will felt it, embroider it, stitch your initials and location (state, country, etc.) on the bottom and share "your" stone here on my blog when I've finished it. When the project is completed, I hope to find a place to have all of the stones displayed. The thought of all those stones... your stones, my work, nestled together with others, and what that represents makes my chest swell with happiness.
If you'd like to join in, please read the details below. If you know anyone else who would like to take part, I'd love it if you would share this with them too.
- Stones that are between 3/4" to 3" long work best.
- Stones that have a smooth or mostly smooth surface work best.
- I can't refund postage costs.
- Please include a note with your stone with your initials, location, and your name and blog or website if you'd like me to share it when I post your completed stone. If you'd like to tell me about where you found your stone, I'd love to hear that too.
- A few of you have asked if you can get your stone back when the project is completed. At this stage I can't commit to getting your stone back in your hands. If, at the end of this, the stones go up for sale then I would like to give you first dibs on your stone, but right now I'm not sure where this project will end up.

I would love to join it sounds like so much fun! Part of me just wants to write on my stone like it's a letter and stick it in the mail box with a few stamps on it. But I know the post lady would just punch me in the face ha ha ^_^ I'm in!(and I'll get an envelope)
Ooh, I love mireya's idea but I'll box my stone as well. It's coming from where I collected it (for painting) off the beach in Seward, Alaska. :D

Karen - I haven't completely worked that detail out yet. I would say that if the stones do go up for sale, that I'd like to offer you first dibs on the stone you sent, but I'm not sure yet where this project will end up.

I collected some rocks up in Maine with my big brother before he died. I stayed with him while he emptied his house, then he came back to NH to stay with us until he passed.
These rocks are special, but the dates are old. They came to mind as soon as I started reading. I'm thinking my big brother approves! 8*)
what if some , who are able sent you a stitched and felted stone instead of a raw one. That would also be amazing and may lessen your load, literally:) Either way you can count me in of course but head's up for your post person. They better start doing some weight training.

Oh Margie and Kristin - you are wonderful. I love that you're willing to send me a felted stone. For this project, I would like the felting and stitching to be my contribution but oh my goodness how amazing would that kind of project be? I'd love that! Let's keep it in mind for the future.

Ahhh, stellar idea! I will definatley be sending you a stone. I have some from Prudoe Bay, Alaska that I think will be the right size. It may take another month or so for me to get it in the mail but I will try to have it sent by the middle of January. I'm very excited to see how this all works out.

Sending a stone from rural Nevada your way. If you decide to sell the stones after the show could you use a portion of the funds to help support a local youth and/or childrens art program?

I can't even imagine you working on 100 + stones! What a fun idea and I'll be sending my stone to you soon. I think you should definitely set up some kind of show with them. While I would love the opportunity to buy my stone back from you, I think it would be great for you to keep them all in a traveling show.
I will send a Uk stone........there are some magical stones on a beach near us that have holes in them, worn by the sea...........wonder how difficult it would be for one of those to felt!

Hi Lisa, sorry, me (Doggenfan from France) again. I have been thinking about your project last night (the things we do at night..;) and came up with this idea: AFTER this project has been finished and IF you will still be happy with stones, would it be an idea if people could send you an already felted stone WITH embroidery thread so won't have the costs for material, than you do your magic with it, put the stones up for publicity, exposition and sale and donate the money to a good cause? That would be such a great thing and so internationally orientated! What do you think? Warm regards from cold France :)

I love working with found materials as well so this stone project has really captured my imagination.
I'd love to send you a stone from Seattle, WA if you're still accepting them.
I've also been experimenting with natural dye techniques and I thought it might be fun to dye some roving with gathered lichen from my area and send it along. It imparts the most amazing scent and beautiful color on the wool I've dyed so far.
Just let me know how much roving you would need for about an inch in diameter stone.

Sara - I am still accepting stones and I'd love for you to take part. If you'd like to send a little roving along, that would be fine too. I can always weave some of your wool in with mine so the amount you send can be just a tiny bit or enough to wrap around the stone. I took a look at your blog and your lichen results are lovely. I just found your blog today. A friend sent me a link as I had mentioned to her that I will make felted stones with my 6th grade class when we go away on our annual class trip. I've done this with classes before and they love it. I've got lots of stones from our trips and I'd love to send you one, if you still need some, I think I might be a bit late. I live in Turkey but I'm off to NYC for a weeks visit at Easter so I could send it then. Let me know if you are still happy to get a stone.
