Earth Hour Tonight

light the candles
This was last year's Earth Hour project - frosted baby food jars
My kids love Earth Hour.  So much so that we celebrate Earth Hour several times a year.  We light candles and the kids run around with their wind-up flashlights exploring the shadowy parts of the house.  For us it's about being part of a statement about climate change.  For them it's just fun.  It does make me proud to hear them tell their friends about Earth Hour though, and they do have a basic understanding about why we do it  but usually their conversations lean more towards "I got to play with a flashlight!!" than a discussion about activism, and I'm okay with that.

For me it's a good time to think about our energy usage and our consumption and waste in general.  No doubt this year I'll be thinking of the people in Japan as well.

If you'd like to join in, Earth Hour is tonight at 8:30 local time, wherever you are in the world.  Turn off the lights, turn off the laptop, unplug and unwind. (or wind your flashlights, if you've got 'em)

I do! I do have a wind up flashlight! And a wind up radio, too! I'll have to remember to put on my pjs before I turn out the lights since we'll get sleepy immediately. We're old. Good at unplugging and turning off lights but old. :->

Planning on it. Step-daughter posted photo from Singapore showing city just coming alight after their hour. Can't wait for satellite photos.

We missed it this year :( BUT we did spend the ENTIRE 30 degree 15 mph windy day outside building up/ framing newly raised gardens beds. So in that sense we practiced our own eco-sustainability :)

... and now I am stalking you Lisa LOL ... having just discovered that you have the most wonderful blog too!

I am very interested to see the delightful tutorials on the side. I have a friend coming to stay in a few weeks who is keen to get started with some art projects so I think we may have a go together at some of your tutorials for some fun. I will be sure to let you know how we get on and post on my blog too ... with links to your blog

Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Love Carolyn x

Sadly I missed it, but hope to join in another time. Beautiful picture of your lantern jars, by the way.

BAH! I love earth hour, too! And a sure sign that there's too much going on in my life...I forgot all about it! Thanks for the reminder. We'll have to celebrate it another night.
